Seagate NVMe Protocol Mechanical Hard Drives Revealed, U.2 Interface

According to TechPowerUp, Seagate’s first mechanical hard drive with the NVMe protocol has now been revealed.

According to reports, the above picture is Seagate’s latest U.2 interface NVMe protocol Exos series enterprise disk.

According to the interface, U.2 NVMe (32Gbps) interface transfer speed compared to the traditional SATA (6Gbps) and SAS (12 Gbps) has significantly improved, the next few generations of rackmount DAS and NAS chassis may increasingly support the U.2 interface, gradually eliminating SAS and SATA.

The 2021 release of the NVMe specification version 2.0 adds support for HDD mechanical drives. Last November, Seagate demonstrated at the Open Compute Project Summit the industry’s first mechanical hard drive using the PCIe interface to connect to a host, using the NVMe protocol for seamless operation with SSD drives. Based on Seagate’s proprietary controller, the product is described as supporting all three major protocols, including SAS, SATA and NVMe, using a “native NVMe interface” that does not require any bridging. Previously, it was announced that commercial PCIe/NVMe mechanical drives may not be available until mid-2024.
