Samsung trademarks Flex G dual-folding smartphone-tablet hybrid

You may or may not remember the Flex G and Flex S concept foldable devices that Samsung showed off at CES 2022, but you can refresh your memory below. In short, the Flex S and Flex G are dual-folding phone-tablet hybrid concepts designed by Samsung Display to showcase form factors that are achievable with foldable technologies other than the flip-style Galaxy Z Flip and book-style Galaxy Z Fold.

These concepts are presented today because Samsung has just registered the trademark “Flex G” in Korea.

Last July, Samsung Display also filed a trademark application for the name “S Flex” at KIPRIS. Now “Flex G” has been added to the list, and the two names are classified under the same category at the Korea Intellectual Property Information Service. And the company has also experimented with larger foldable devices, such as the Flex Note concept. The latter is likely to join KIPRIS’ other two “Flex” devices soon.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip lineups have done quite well, with both products leading people to believe that the era of foldable phones has officially arrived, and the company may be preparing to expand into the emerging field of foldable devices with new form factors.

Samsung has said that it has no plans to release any other foldable devices until it ensures the success and refinement of the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip product lines. Will that time be now? Only Samsung knows.

There’s also the simple fact that Samsung Display is a different company from Samsung Electronics, and it was the display division that showed off the Flex S and Flex G concepts and got the trademark. In other words, Samsung Display is a company that may want to sell its foldable panels to as many customers as possible, and these types of bi-fold panels made by the Display division may eventually be used by other mobile device makers besides Samsung.
