Samsung showcases a 12.4-inch rollable OLED panel

The annual Display Week trade show in Los Angeles, Samsung showed off a revolutionary 12.4-inch curlable OLED panel.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a curlable panel, but this one from Samsung is the largest yet and can be rolled up into a tiny scroll. This panel can be expanded from 49 mm to 254.4 mm, which means it can be expanded 5 times, while similar screens currently only expand to 3 times the original size. Samsung Display said they achieved this technology by using a scroll-like O-axis, which the company calls Rollable Flex, that can be rolled up completely.

In addition to Rollable Flex, Samsung also introduced a Flex In & Out OLED panel that can bend in two directions instead of folding in only one, like the technology currently in use, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Flip4 and Fold4.

Samsung also launched the world’s first OLED panel with integrated fingerprint recognition and heart rate sensor, which allows you to touch your finger anywhere on the screen to unlock your phone. The technology embeds a photosensitive organic photodiode (OPD) into the panel itself, which can also read blood pressure, heart rate and pressure levels by monitoring the contraction and diastole of blood vessels inside the finger.
