Samsung SDI is advancing stacked battery technology as energy density increases by more than 10%

According to Korean media The Elec report, Samsung SDI recently opened a tender for a new battery stacking mass production technology, and two Chinese manufacturers won the bid. The tender also attracted two Korean companies to bid but lost to the Chinese company.

The report did not mention the names of the two Chinese companies that won the bid, but only said that the two companies will set up offices in South Korea to work with Samsung SDI to promote this new battery technology.

Samsung SDI has already deployed battery stacking technology, which is mainly used to produce the fifth generation of batteries for electric vehicles. The technology allows for a more compact battery with higher energy density by stacking anodes, cathodes and other materials.

Samsung SDI has previously used the winding method, in which battery materials are rolled up and placed in a tank. The stacking method can increase energy density by more than 10% compared to existing methods.
