Samsung responds to the Galaxy S23 Ultra shooting the moon “fake”:no image overlay processing of the picture

Recently, the moon photos taken by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra phone have sparked heated discussions on the Internet. There are multiple reports that Samsung used AI image overlay technology when shooting the moon to make the moon look clearer and more real. A Reddit user recently demonstrated how Samsung overcomputes photos of the moon. Judging by the photos, the netizen seems to be right, as it is impossible for the phone’s small camera sensor to capture that much detail. However, Samsung insists that it did not do any photo-processing of the moon photos.

In response to allegations of these fake moon photos, Samsung told the TomsGuide website: “Samsung is committed to providing the best photo experience under any conditions. When users take pictures of the moon, AI-based scene optimization technology will recognize that the moon is the main subject, And do a multi-frame composite, then the AI will enhance the image quality and color details. It will not apply any image overlay (image overlaying) to the photo. The user can turn off the AI based scene optimization function, which will disable the automatic processing of the photos taken by the user Enhanced detail.”

That said, Samsung has denied any suggestion that the Galaxy S23 Ultra uses AI-based image overlay technology to enhance details in moon photos. The company says users can turn off the AI-based scene optimization feature in the camera settings, which will disable detail enhancement in photos taken by the user.

There is no conclusive evidence yet whether Samsung used AI-based image overlay technology for moon photos. However, Another photographer, Fahim Al Mahmud Ashik, showed how to use any modern high-end phone (including Apple iPhone 14 Pro and OnePlus 11) to take clearly visible pictures of the moon. The photographer released a full video showing how he managed to capture these images, which means that many brands are faking moon images, or not at all.

Regarding the controversy, no matter what Samsung says, the Galaxy S23 Ultra did apply artificial intelligence to increase the details of the moon photo, however, Samsung did not fake the photo with a completely different image of the moon, simply put, you took it with the Galaxy S23 Ultra phone Moon photos are not Photoshopped.
