Samsung officially denies stopping development of Exynos mobile chips

Samsung today denied rumors that it will discontinue its Exynos chip business, with rumors suggesting that the company will skip carrying Exynos chips in its flagship phones in 2023 or even 2024.

According to the Korea Daily Economic Daily, Samsung said during a conference call in the second quarter of 2022 that the claim that it will stop its Exynos business is “completely incorrect.

Samsung explained, “We are currently restructuring our system-on-a-chip (SoC) business model and are working on a plan to strengthen our mid- to long-term competitiveness.”

Samsung added: “In particular, we are focused on strengthening the competitiveness of our next-generation mobile Exynos and working to maximize market share for key customers by strengthening our partnerships with leading IP companies and beginning early development.”

Previous reports have suggested that Samsung is developing an ambitious custom SoC for its Galaxy flagship phone, with the chip reportedly due out in 2025.

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said, “The Galaxy S23 probably won’t use Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 2300 chip because it can’t compete in every way with the SM8550, which is optimized for TSMC’s design rules and is therefore more computationally and power efficient than the SM8450 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) / SM8475 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1). Qualcomm / SM8550 will gain more market share in the high-end Android market in 2023. The recession will have less of an impact on the high-end market, so market share growth will significantly benefit Qualcomm and TSMC.”
