Samsung Exynos 1480 SoC released, AMD-based GPU performance improved by 53%

A few weeks ago, Samsung released the Galaxy A55 phone equipped with the Exynos 1480 processor, but the name of the chipset was not officially announced at that time. Now Samsung has finally revealed the mystery and officially announced this new Exynos chip for the mid-range market.

Compared with last year’s Exynos 1380, which was based on the 5nm process, the Exynos 1480 uses Samsung’s own 4nm (4LPP+) process. The new chip has four ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.75GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz. Samsung says the Exynos 1480 is 22% more energy efficient than its predecessor and is compatible with LPDDR4x/LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage.

It is noted that the biggest highlight of the Exynos 1480 is that it integrates the industry’s first Xclipse 530 GPU based on AMD’s RDNA architecture. Previous reports stated that the GPU uses the RDNA 2 architecture, but Samsung’s official website claims that it uses the latest RDNA architecture, RDNA 3. The specific details are not yet clear.

Samsung claims that the GPU performance of the Exynos 1480 is 53% higher than that of the Exynos 1380. It also supports advanced gaming features such as variable rate rendering (VRS) and super resolution (improved image frame rate), which will bring a mid-range performance compared to the past. Exynos chips dramatically improve the gaming experience.

The Exynos 1480’s image signal processor (ISP) supports up to 200-megapixel camera sensors and can process image data from two 32-megapixel sensors simultaneously with zero shutter lag (30fps), or from a single 64-megapixel sensor. Image data (zero shutter lag and HDR). Compared to the Exynos 1380, which can only record 4K 30fps video, the Exynos 1480 can record 4K 60fps video.

Thanks to the built-in Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU), Exynos 1480’s terminal AI performance is improved by 4 times compared to Exynos 1380. In addition, the Exynos 1480 also integrates a 5G baseband that supports millimeter wave and sub-6GHz networks. The theoretical maximum download speed can reach 5.1Gbps, which is twice that of the Exynos 1380, and the maximum upload speed can reach 1.28Gbps.

Other connectivity features of the Exynos 1480 include GNSS (Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS and GPS), Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and USB Type-C port.
