Samsung announced in a press release issued today that Samsung Research Institute and Google have developed a 3D spatial audio technology IAMF, which will be adopted by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM) in October 2023.
Note: IAMF stands for “Immersive Audio Model and Formats”, which refers to immersive audio models and formats.
According to reports, although 3D audio has many advantages, it has been difficult to be applied to home audio equipment for a long time due to technical limitations. Hwang SungHee, an engineer at Samsung Research Institute, said that currently 3D audio information from audio and video content cannot be correctly interpreted by home audio systems such as TV speakers or sound bars, resulting in a limited audio experience.
To this end, Samsung has teamed up with Google to develop an audio solution. Samsung said that if device manufacturers can read 3D audio data, they can adjust the sound in the audio device, allowing for an “immersive” audio experience through standard TV speakers or speakers in the home.
IAMF has three major features: vertical audio, AI-based scene analysis and audio customization. Engineer Nam WooHyun said that this technology can make the sound more and more “multi-directional”, allowing the listener to hear the sound from the front, rear, side, above, and below. For example, the viewer can hear the sound above the head through the TV using this technology. The sound of birds came. “I hope users can get an immersive feeling, and I want to continue this research until 3D audio is available on Samsung smartphones.”
In addition, IAMF can also use AI and deep learning technology to analyze scenes and emphasize the key parts of the content – such as the background music, sound effects, or character dialogue of some scenes in film and television dramas.
As for audio customization, IAMF technology allows users to freely adjust the sound effects according to their own preferences, whether it is scene sounds or character dialogue. The official showed a scenario: when watching a football game, users can choose to highlight the commentary or the live sound.
According to officials, IAMF is the first open source-based audio technology standard adopted by the Open Media Alliance, which means that enterprises or individual creators across the industry can adopt this technology and expand its use.
