Samsung Announces 990 PRO SSD with 55% Improved Speed Performance

Samsung officially announced the release of the 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 SSD. Officially, the 990 PRO fully balances the requirements of high speed, high power efficiency and high reliability, making it ideal for creative practitioners and experienced gamers who need to work non-stop.

The Samsung 990 PRO series of products from Samsung features new V-NAND technology and a newly launched in-house controller that delivers ultra-high speeds in the PCIe 4.0 interface. The SSDs deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively, and random read and write speeds of up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS, respectively. 55% more random read and write performance is achieved with the 990 PRO compared to the 980 PRO.

Samsung says the 990 PRO with NVMe technology will reduce game load times on PCs and consoles, providing a more immersive gaming experience. When tested with this game, the map loading time was reduced to about 1 second, compared to 4 seconds for SATA SSDs and 28 seconds for mechanical hard drives (HDDs).

In addition, Samsung’s newly designed controller significantly improves SSD efficiency by up to 50% compared to the 980 PRO. In addition, the 990 PRO ensures reliable heat management by adding a nickel coating to the controller and using a tabbed heatsink on the drive. 990 PRO (heatsink version) also offers an additional layer of heat control, while its RGB lighting adds a stylish touch.

The 990 PRO will be available worldwide in November, retailing for $179 (approximately RMB 1,224.36) for the 1TB model and $309 (approximately RMB 2,113.56) for the 2TB version, with a 4TB model coming next year.
