Samsung and AMD collaborate to push second-generation SmartSSD: 50% shorter query time than traditional data center SSDs

Samsung Electronics today announced that it has worked with AMD to develop a second-generation SmartSSD that more than doubles the computing performance of the company’s initial SmartSSD, which will be launched in 2020. Unlike traditional SSDs, Samsung officials say SmartSSDs process data directly, minimizing data transfers between the CPU (central processing unit), GPU (graphics processing unit) and RAM (random access memory).

This technology avoids the bottlenecks that often occur when transferring data between storage devices and CPUs, thereby significantly improving system performance and energy efficiency.

Leveraging the Arm core and using relevant customer-developed intellectual property (IP) and software, Samsung’s second-generation SmartSSD enables more efficient data processing. Compared to Samsung’s traditional data center SSDs, query times for heavy database scanning can be reduced by more than 50 percent, power consumption can be reduced by 70 percent, and CPU utilization can be reduced by up to 97 percent.

Jin-Hyeok Choi, Head of Solution Products and Development at Samsung Electronics, said, “After working with AMD, the commercialization of the first-generation SmartSSD demonstrates the tremendous potential of the compute storage market. The upgraded processing capabilities of the second-generation SmartSSD allow Samsung to easily meet growing customer demand in database and video transcoding and expand into the next-generation storage market.”

Powered by AMD’s Xilinx Versal™ adaptive SoCs (processors), Samsung’s second-generation SmartSSDs effectively integrate data center compute and storage functions, significantly reducing power consumption while significantly improving CPU efficiency,” said Sina Soltani, corporate vice president of sales, AECG, data center and communications group at AMD. As data-intensive applications continue to grow, Samsung’s second-generation SmartSSDs will deliver the superior performance and efficiency required for this expanding market.”
