Samsung acquires eMagin to develop RGB OLEDoS screen for Apple XR headset: 7000 PPI target

Samsung recently announced the acquisition of U.S. OLED research and development company eMagin, to advance RGB OLEDoS technology to meet Apple’s future demand for extended reality (XR) headset screens.

RGB OLEDoS technology is a display technology that combines semiconductors and OLED panels to achieve ultra-high resolution in a tiny size, and has the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, high PPI, fast response time and low power consumption, mainly for AR/VR devices.

At present, Japan’s Sony is the leader in OLEDoS, which uses white organic light-emitting material OLED as the light source with red, green and blue filters to achieve the display effect, and its technology has more room for progress.

Samsung Display also has a long-term plan for the development of this technology, which is expected to provide OLEDoS screens to Samsung’s parent company in 2024, with a resolution of up to 3000ppi per inch and a brightness of 10,000nit, but Samsung Display’s ultimate goal is for OLEDoS screens to reach a resolution of between 6000ppi and 7000ppi.

RGB OLEDoS current technical challenge lies in the dense deposition of sub-pixels together, eMagin development called direct patterning technology (dPd), without the use of color filters, in addition to the company also has its own silicon backplane technology.

Citing Korean media The Elec, eMagin will be incorporated into the Samsung Display division, which is dedicated to developing OLEDoS technology for XR devices.
