Some time ago, both the Samsung 980 Pro and 990 Pro SSD series experienced feedback of plummeting health, and the 980 Pro issue has now been resolved with the 5B2QGXA7 firmware.
Today, Samsung has pushed out a 1B2QJXD7 firmware update via the Samsung Magician app to help Samsung 990 Pro users solve the problem. This firmware can only stop the health from continuing to deteriorate, but cannot reverse the previous health loss, but does not rule out the possibility of Samsung subsequently replacing the drive with a new one for free.
SMART values are not restored to factory settings after a firmware update, and the actual SMART value for each SSD will vary depending on the user’s environment and usage.
The 990 PRO is Samsung’s current flagship consumer-grade SSD, priced at up to 999 yuan for 1TB and 2199 yuan for 2TB. Robbie Khan, editor of Neowin, a foreign technology media, wrote in January that his 990 PRO experienced a problem of rapid decline in health after a few days of purchase, and Samsung officials refused to guarantee the warranty.
Earlier this month, Samsung moderator DavidB said engineers were investigating “issues related to the Samsung SSD 990 Pro’s SMART usage percentage in Samsung Magician and/or abnormal health status on Crystal Disk Info.”
Robbie Khan said that just a few days after buying the 990 Pro 2TB, according to the SMART data of Samsung Magician and third-party tools, the health of the solid-state drive has dropped to 99%, while a Samsung solid-state drive he bought before has already dropped to 99%. Write more than 40TB, and the health is still 99% after 1.5 years of use, so the newly purchased SSD is obviously abnormal.
