Russia’s own 8-core CPU performance test: can play decades-old games

How about the performance of Russia’s self-developed chips? The latest evaluation:

"CPU processors with self-developed architectures are able to run decades-old games."

The test was conducted by tube-blogger Elbrus PC Play on the Elbrus-8SV processor, which uses the Very Long Instruction Set architecture, or VLIW architecture.

Elbrus is relatively well-known in Russia’s self-developed processors. The official specification of Elbrus-8SV is 8-core 1.5GHz, 16MB L3 cache, and supports four-channel DDR4-2400ECC memory.

Elbrus-8SV has a single-precision computing power of 576GFLOPs and double-precision computing power of 288GFLOPs, which is equivalent to the XEON W-2150B released by Intel five years ago (2018), with a computing power of 580GFLOPs.

Compared with the previous generation processor Elbrus-8S, which also has 8 cores, the performance of Elbrus-8SV has been improved by about two times.

Specifically, in various game scenarios, how effective is Elbrus-8SV and how does it play?

It can actually be played, and the frame rate is up to 200FPS
As usual, let’s take a look at my test platform first, which is equipped with 32GB DDR4 ECC memory and AMD RX 580 graphics card, and then runs on the Elbrus OS 7.1 operating system developed in Russia based on Linux 5.4.

Several games tested this time are also “old friends”, including “Stalker: Call of Pripyat”, “Stalker: Clear Sky”, “The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind” and “CS: GO “Wait.

Not much to say next, just look at the evaluation results.

The Elbrus-8SV performed well on The Dark Mod for The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind and Doom 3.

Framerates top out at 200+FPS on The Elder Scrolls 3, but overall the frame rate will oscillate between 30FPS and 200FPS depending on the complexity of the scene.

As for The Dark Mod, it runs pretty well on relatively basic settings, offering frame rates between 30FPS and 60FPS, which is still relatively fluid when you look at the operation.

In the two stalker games tested by Elbrus-8SV, it can’t be said that it’s just so so, it can only be said that it’s almost impossible to play, and the frame rate is hard to exceed 30FPS when running in low quality.

In addition to these games, I also tested some less popular games, the results are as above, there are good and bad.

However, for a processor with outdated design and technology, it is not bad to be able to barely play games.

Better and faster processors have been made
While the performance of the Elbrus-8SV was mediocre, its company, MCST, has revealed that it has now developed an even better chip: the Elbrus-16C.

This processor uses a 16nm process, has 16 CPU cores and a faster clock frequency of 2GHz, and also supports 8 channels of memory and 32 PCIe 3.0 lanes.

And Elbrus-8SV claims that the single-precision computing power has increased to 1500GFLOPs, and the double-precision has 750GFLOPs. Compared with the performance of Elbrus-8SV, it has increased by 1.6 times.

However, it is worth mentioning that under the current situation, it is almost difficult for Russian chips to find factories for mass production.
