Russia will launch a remote sensing satellite named “Khayyam” into space on behalf of Iran on Aug. 9, the Russian Space State Group said Wednesday.
The Russian space group said the remote sensing satellite will be sent into orbit by a Soyuz carrier rocket.
A year ago, it was announced that Russia was preparing to provide satellites to Iran, with plans to deliver a Russian-made Kanopus-V satellite equipped with a high-resolution camera.
Soyuz is the third generation of manned spacecraft developed by the Soviet Union, the spacecraft was designed by the Soviet Union’s First Design Bureau in the 1960s for the Soviet Union’s moon landing program and continues to be used by the Russian Federal Space Agency after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
After the retirement of the U.S. space shuttle in 2011 and until the first flight of the manned Dragon 2 on May 30, 2020, the Soyuz spacecraft is the only way for astronauts from all countries to travel to and from the International Space Station.
The low cost, excellent reliability and upgrade potential of Soyuz spacecraft have kept them active on the spaceflight scene 50 years after their first flight. As of 2021, there have been more than 140 missions on Soyuz spacecraft of all types.
