ROG handhelds launch new firmware to improve performance at low power consumption

The ROG handheld was officially released on May 11 with an AMD Z1 Extreme processor + 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screen, starting from $699 (about RMB 4844), and will be available worldwide on June 13.

According to VideoCardz, a new firmware was released before the launch of the handheld, which greatly improves the performance of games with low power consumption.

As shown in the graph above, the frame rate improvement of the ROG handheld with the new firmware ranges from 15% to 20% in 720p gaming tests. The R7 7840U-based Z1 Extreme processor outperformed Steam Deck in both 15W and 25W power consumption, but Steam Deck outperformed at a low 9W power consumption.

The ROG handheld is equipped with AMD’s new Riptide Z1 Extreme processor, customized for gaming handhelds, with Zen 4 advanced architecture and RDNA 3 graphics, with 8 large cores, 16 threads, and graphics performance of up to 8.6 TFLOPS, comparable to home gaming consoles. It supports AMD FSR and RSR super-resolution technologies to improve graphics display and frame rate, and effectively reduce lag.

The ROG handheld is equipped with the Glacier Cooling Architecture Handheld Edition, which innovatively introduces dual fans to the handheld side, bringing far better cooling and lower noise levels than ordinary single fans, along with ultra-thin ice wing fins and optimized upright heat pipes to ensure the entire machine stays cool and stable in all usage scenarios. The ROG handheld is also equipped with 16GB of ultra-fast LPDDR5 6400MHz dual-channel memory, a 512GB PCIe 4.0 solid-state drive, a UHS-II microSD card slot for further storage expansion, and Wi-Fi 6E wireless networking support.

The ROG handheld comes standard with a 1080P Full HD, 120Hz high refresh rate gaming screen with a 7ms response time and FreeSync Premium anti-tearing technology to say goodbye to screen tearing and bring the best visual clarity and smoothness. The screen also features 500 units of high brightness and supports ten-point touch control.

ROG handheld for handheld users to launch the Ultron Smart Control Center SE, boot automatically, installed games can be neatly presented in the form of tiles and users can quickly select to play. Ultron Smart Control Center SE also offers a variety of customization settings such as performance mode quick adjustment, button shoulder and trigger customization, vibration feedback adjustment, and god light synchronization.

The ROG handheld can also be further connected to the XG Mobile graphics docking station to achieve high performance and enjoy the 4K 3A masterpiece PRO TIME.
