Reduce dependence on Google and Apple, India will develop and promote self-developed system IndOS

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android have almost all the share of the mobile operating systems in India. In response to this crisis, India has decided to develop and promote a system called IndOS.

According to sources cited by Business Standard, the mobile platform will run on smartphones and hopes to change the way Indians use these devices.

IndOS is the latest attempt by the Indian government to reduce reliance on global tech giants such as Google and Apple and give local developers room to grow and connect with the country’s millions of smartphone users.

Can IndOS shake up the Indian mobile market?

Currently, in the Indian mobile market, the market share of the Android system exceeds 95%. The company takes advantage of this by partnering with phone makers, giving them the Android operating system for free but requiring Google apps such as Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Pay to be pre-installed.

IndOS promises to change this perception, which means that users can choose from a wide range of applications, especially those belonging to local developers in India.

The Indian government stated:

"India is one of the largest mobile device markets in the world. Our goal is to create a secure Indian mobile operating system where users have new options beyond the Android and iOS platforms. indOS wants to provide more choices for Indian users, which is a win-win situation for both consumers and developers."

Richer apps on a secure foundation

IndOS wants people to be free to download from other app stores on a secure basis. The government intends to make IndOS secure enough to handle such cross-platform tasks without compromising the data that resides on those devices. But no official solution has been announced.
