The 2023 Qualcomm Summit has now officially begun. The first product launched by Qualcomm is the new Snapdragon X platform designed for PC products. Its flagship product is named “Snapdragon X Elite”.
Snapdragon X Elite uses a customized Oryon CPU, built on a 4nm process, with 12 3.8GHz large cores, supporting dual-core turbo frequency to 4.3GHz, a memory bandwidth of 136GB/s, and a total cache of 42MB. The specifications of Snapdragon X Elite as follows:
While it doesn’t support Thunderbolt 4 or 5, it does support up to 3x USB 4.0 as well as 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 and 1x eUSB2. With DP1.4, it can support up to three 4K UHD displays (60Hz) or two 5K displays.
For comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S has just 4 TFlops of computing power (Series X has 12.15 TFlops).
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said that it is stronger than Apple’s 12-core M2 Max and Intel’s 14-core Core i7-1355U in terms of single-thread performance, and when reaching the peak performance of M2 Max, the power consumption is only 1/3 of the other party. When reaching the peak performance of i7-1355U or i7-1360P, the power consumption is only 1/3 of the other one.
Compared to the Core i7-13800H, it’s expected to deliver 60% better performance while also consuming just one-third of the 45W.
In terms of multi-core, Qualcomm claims that it is 50% faster than Apple’s M2 processor at peak performance.
In some charts, Qualcomm claims that the X Elite platform can deliver 2x the performance of Intel’s 13th generation Core i7-1355U (10 cores) and Core i7-1360P (12 cores), while consuming only 1/2 of the power when reaching its peak performance. 3 levels.
In addition, Qualcomm even claims that it is 60% faster than Intel’s 13th generation Core i7-13800H (14-core) standard processor, while also consuming only 1/3 of the power.
In terms of GPU, Qualcomm claims that it is 2 times faster than Intel Iris Xe in i7-13800H, and consumes only 1/4 of its power. It is even expected to achieve 80% of the power consumption of AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS core display. Performance improvements.
In terms of NPU, Qualcomm said it aims to usher in a new era of localized AI processing and will become an important driver of Windows 12 (2024).
Qualcomm said the new Hexagon NPU can provide up to 45 TOP (tera operations per second) computing power and can run generative AI LLM (large language model) with more than 13B parameters at “amazing speed” on the device.
As everyone has guessed, since there is an “Elite” version of Snapdragon X, there will naturally be a regular version as well. Qualcomm expects laptops powered by Snapdragon X Elite chips to be available in mid-2024, with initial launch manufacturers including Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell and HP.
Qualcomm also admitted that the Elite series is just one of many versions the company plans to release over the next few years to hit different PC segments at different price points to better compete with Intel and AMD.
In fact, Qualcomm said during its keynote that Oryon won’t just work on Windows laptops, but will “enter smartphones, cars, XR devices and more in the future.”
