Qualcomm says Samsung Galaxy S23 / Ultra will have a higher percentage of Snapdragon Gen 2 chips

Qualcomm announced that it is strengthening its strategic partnership with Samsung to help Samsung Galaxy devices deliver an even better consumer experience. The two sides agreed to extend the 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G technology licensing agreements until the end of 2030, which means another seven-year extension.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in the transcript of Qualcomm’s Q3 2022 earnings call, Qualcomm said, “What I can say right now is that prior to the agreement, we were at 75 percent usage on the Galaxy S22. You should consider that we’re in a better position on the Galaxy S23 and newer models.”

Qualcomm also said, “This is a multi-year agreement where we support Samsung’s devices globally.”

This year on July 9, Kuo said, “Qualcomm is likely to be the sole processor supplier for Samsung’s Galaxy S23 thanks to TSMC’s next-generation flagship 5G chip SM8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) made at 4nm (70% of S22 shipments).”

According to Kuo, “The Galaxy S23 will likely not use Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 2300 chip because it can’t compete in every way with the SM8550, which is optimized for TSMC’s design rules and is therefore more computationally and power efficient than the SM8450 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) / SM8475 (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2). SM8475 (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1) has a significant advantage. 2023 Qualcomm / SM8550 will gain more market share in the high-end Android market. The recession will have less of an impact on the high-end market, so market share gains will significantly benefit Qualcomm and TSMC.”

Qualcomm has previously announced that Snapdragon Summit 2022 will be held over three days from November 15 to 17. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is expected to be announced.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the successor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and will be OEM’d by TSMC, still using the 4nm process. MediaTek will also be releasing iterations of the Tiangui 9000/8000 chips, also using TSMC’s 4nm process.
