Qualcomm, Bosch and other companies issued a joint statement on August 4th, stating that Qualcomm, NXP Semiconductors, Bosch, Infineon Technologies, and Nordic Semiconductor will join hands to “jointly invest” to establish a New company based in Germany.

According to the official introduction, the purpose of the company’s establishment is to accelerate the commercialization of future products based on the RISC-V (Note: An open source instruction set architecture based on the principle of reduced instruction set RISC, usually used in chip design). At the same time, the company will be a single source for RISC-V-based compatible products and provide reference architectures to help build solutions widely used in the industry.
The company will focus on automotive applications at the beginning of its establishment, and then gradually expand to mobile devices, Internet of Things chips and other fields. The joint statement also pointed out that the core of RISC-V is to encourage innovation and will allow any company to develop cutting-edge custom hardware based on the open source instruction set. The further application of this technology will promote the diversification of the electronics industry: lower the barriers to entry for small and emerging companies, and increase the scalability of established companies.
Jens Fabrowsky, executive vice president and head of semiconductor business at Bosch, said that the initiative to promote the RISC-V open specification will bring the global mobile market a big step forward, and the planned initiative will greatly help build a reliable and efficient EU semiconductor industry. ecosystem.
Peter Schiefer, President of Infineon’s Automotive Division, said, “With the increasing softwareization and reliability requirements of vehicles, such as electrification and connectivity, and the development of trends such as autonomous driving, there is a general need for standardization and ecosystem compatibility across the industry. , and the CPU is a key factor. The knowledge and expertise of those leading market players will unleash the full potential of RISC-V in the automotive space.”
