Qualcomm said that through this cooperation, the two parties will work together to integrate the Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile computing platform into Sony’s future smartphone product line and work together to create the next generation of smartphones. Nuo Hamaguchi, head of Sony’s mobile division, said the new Xperia 1 V phone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been more popular than expected.

Industry insiders believe that this means that Qualcomm has strengthened and consolidated customer relationships. In the next few years, regardless of the price, Sony phone products will be equipped with Qualcomm processors, reducing the chance of cooperation with other processor suppliers. Previously, the GeekBench database had exposed a new Sony phone model XQ-DS99, which was equipped with a Dimensity 8000 processor.

Qualcomm and Sony did not announce specific details of their cooperation. However, Japanese media Sumahodigest pointed out that Qualcomm has discussed processor customization services with Sony, and the cooperation between the two parties is expected to be extended to handheld game consoles. In addition, there is news that Qualcomm is expected to put some processors and peripheral chips into production at Sony’s 2nm fab Rapidus and the Kumamoto plant jointly owned by Sony and TSMC.

It is noticed that in recent years, the cooperation between Qualcomm and Sony has continued to deepen. The two will jointly establish a camera and vision laboratory in San Diego, California in 2021. In addition, the 5G NR mmWave laboratory opened by Qualcomm in Farnborough, UK was also the first to be used by Sony.
