Porsche announced that it would recall some Taycan pure electric vehicles from 2021 to 2024, a total of 749 vehicles, because these vehicles have the risk of short circuit in the high-voltage battery.
Through data analysis, Porsche has discovered that some Taycan, Taycan 4S and Taycan 4 Cross Turismo models may have a high-voltage battery short circuit problem. In its 473 safety recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Porsche said: “The high-voltage battery in some Taycan vehicles may short circuit within the battery module, resulting in thermal runaway or even fire.”
The document states that a short circuit in a high-voltage battery will increase the likelihood of a thermal runaway event. The problem appears to lie in the production of high-voltage battery modules, which may be defective, leading to an increased risk of short circuits. According to the documents, the batteries in question were supplied by Poland-based LG Energy Solutions.
Back in 2021, Porsche became aware of a battery fire incident in a Taycan vehicle shortly after charging. By 2023, the company discovered “further suspected battery fires.”
The report states: “Although the source of the problem has not yet been fully identified, Porsche determined that the relevant vehicle had a safety hazard (manufacturer recall identification code APB5) on December 6, 2023. Porsche and the battery unit/module manufacturer continue to investigate and use Data analysis and hardware analysis were used. After further investigation and analysis, Porsche confirmed on March 13, 2024 that more vehicles discovered through data analysis and hardware analysis also had safety risks.”
Any Taycan vehicles produced after March 4, 2024 are not covered by this recall.
However, Porsche recommends that owners only charge the batteries in affected vehicles to 80% charge. In addition, the company said it will obtain vehicle battery data through battery testing or wireless methods. Porsche also mentioned that the replacement battery modules will be manufactured using an improved battery production process.
It is worth mentioning that last year Porsche also recalled 2,570 Taycan vehicles in China due to battery problems.
