Oscar plans to change rules: increase theatrical distribution requirements

According to foreign technology, media Puck News reported that the Oscars in order to boost the theater plans to implement the most significant rule changes in recent history: the best films to increase the theatrical distribution requirements.

The spec change has reportedly been endorsed by Academy CEO Bill Kramer, but a vote by the Board of Governors is needed to approve the plan. The 54-member council is scheduled to vote in late April.

The rule change requires that the best films for nomination and selection be shown in 15 or 20 theaters in the top 50 markets in the U.S. to be eligible. This will undoubtedly have a major impact on streaming services like Apple TV+ and Netflix.

Currently, movies that want to be nominated for an Oscar must be shown in movie theaters for 1 week and support streaming services while playing in theaters and on streaming platforms.

Apple is avoiding restrictions in this area, and according to Bloomberg, people familiar with Apple’s plans have revealed that the company plans to invest $1 billion a year to produce movies and release them in theaters as part of its efforts to boost its visibility in Hollywood and attract users to its streaming services.
