OpenAI co-founder says it’s “easy to cause great harm” and opposes AI open source

In an interview, OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever acknowledged that people with ulterior motives could easily use artificial intelligence to cause harm to others. could easily use AI to cause harm to others.

“These models are very strong and will get stronger and stronger,” he said. “At some point, it’s easy to use these models to cause a lot of harm if someone wants to.”

Ilya Sutskever said this in explaining why OpenAI no longer provides detailed information about how to train these models.

“As AI continues to improve in performance, there’s a reason for not wanting to reveal them,” he said in an interview. “I’m sure that within a few years, it will be very clear to everyone that it’s not wise to open source artificial intelligence.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed similar sentiments in the past.

In an interview earlier this year, Altman said that while the best-case scenario for AI is “so incredibly good that I have a hard time imagining it,” the worst-case scenario is “for all of us to flame out.

Last month, Altman also tweeted that he thinks AI tools can help people become more efficient, healthier and smarter, but also added that the world may not be that far from scary AI tools, so regulating them is “critical.
