OBS Studio 29 Beta supports AV1 hardware encoding for AMD and Intel graphics cards

The classic free open-source streaming software OBS Studio 28.1 release added hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding support for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series “Ada” GPUs.

According to the latest Beta changelog, OBS Studio 29 Beta will also support AV1 hardware encoding for AMD and Intel graphics cards, so the three major manufacturers are basically supported.

According to the GitHub changelog, OBS Studio 29 Beta 1 supports AV1 encoding for AMD RDNA3 GPUs and Intel Arc GPUs, as well as Intel HEVC encoding and support for native HEVC and ProRes encoders on macOS.

In 2018, the Open Media Alliance (AOMedia) released AV1 (AOMedia Video Codec 1.0), a next-generation video codec. The codec was developed in collaboration with the Open Media Alliance and encodes 4K UHD video with an average compression rate 30% higher than similar encoders. AV1 codec support has been announced for Firefox, Cutscene Pro, and the Android subsystem of Microsoft Windows 11, WSA.
