NXP launches Matter dedicated security chip: integrated NFC functionality

NXP Semiconductors recently announced the launch of EdgeLock SE051H, a security chip designed specifically for Matter. EdgeLock SE051H is a single-chip solution with NFC integration, designed to simplify the security of Matter devices and bring a new smart home user experience – just tap an NFC-enabled phone for automated recommendations, installation videos and content. The EdgeLock SE051H is a single-chip solution with NFC integration designed to simplify secure authentication of Matter devices and deliver a new smart home user experience – automation recommendations, installation videos and more at the touch of an NFC-enabled phone.

The EdgeLock SE051H is optimized to support these requirements, including the algorithms and encryption features required by Matter, allowing device manufacturers to easily integrate necessary security protection into the end device.

The EdgeLock SE051H is certified to Common Criteria EAL 6+ and supports the cryptographic operations required for Matter certified smart devices. These include Matter device authentication and certificate-based authentication using ECC cryptography and NIST P-256 profiles, as well as the SPAKE2+ algorithm for cryptographic authentication key exchange. To protect the Matter protocol, the chip is also equipped with key security features such as ECDSA, ECDH and true random number generators. In addition, the EdgeLock SE051H integrates an NFC interface and Class 4 tagging capabilities.

As a security requirement for Matter, the device verification certificate can be used to confirm device authenticity, prove trustworthiness and establish empirically signed connections to the larger Matter network.

NXP was one of the first semiconductor manufacturers to be awarded Trusted Product Certification Body status by CSA, and its EdgeLock 2GO service provides a flexible platform for securely configuring IoT devices. When used in conjunction with EdgeLock SE051H, EdgeLock 2GO can pre-inject certificates directly into the chip at wafer fabrication or securely issue certificates via Over-the-Air Remote (OTA), which provides end-to-end security, to simplify supply chain management and be Matter-compliant.

Matter is an IoT standard from CSA, the Connectivity Standards Alliance, designed to improve the interoperability of smart devices between brands that can be used together with other smart home devices from Apple, Google, Amazon and other companies. matter works over Wi-Fi and Thread, with Wi-Fi allowing smart home devices to communicate with the cloud and Thread providing energy-efficient and reliable networking. The first version of Matter will support a variety of smart home products such as lighting, HVAC controls, window shades, safety and security sensors, door locks, media devices, controllers and bridges.
