Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t start a company

Jensen Huang has built Nvidia into a trillion-dollar company. However, the company’s founder and CEO recently revealed in a podcast program “Acquired” that the process of founding Nvidia was more complicated than his. It was a million times harder than expected, and if he had known how difficult the process was, he would not have chosen to start a business.

“Back then, I don’t think anyone would have started a company if we had realized the pain and suffering and how vulnerable you were going to feel and the challenges and embarrassment and shame you were going to endure and the list of all the things that went wrong,” Jensen Huang said. No one in their right mind would do that.”

Jensen Huang said, “You have to convince yourself that it’s not difficult, because it’s much harder than you think. If I went back with all the knowledge I have now and had to endure the whole journey again, I think it would be too difficult.”

Jensen Huang is a Chinese-American born in Taiwan in 1963. His family later immigrated to Thailand and the United States. He worked at companies such as AMD and LSI Logic before deciding to start Nvidia in 1993 after meeting two partners at a Denny’s restaurant in San Jose, California. The “superpower” of entrepreneurs, he said, is the ability to convince themselves that “it’s not that hard.” He believes this is a must-have ability for entrepreneurs because if they knew the real difficulties and costs, they might give up.

Jensen Huang said that his biggest fear in starting a business was disappointing his employees. He said employees join the company because they believe in his vision and dreams and make them their own. He wants to be successful for them so they can live a good life. He said that after the company went public, the stock price experienced many large fluctuations, which made him feel very embarrassed and intolerable. He thanked those who have supported him through this process. Jensen Huang owns 3.5% of Nvidia, according to FactSet.

Jensen Huang said that the current development of AI has brought huge opportunities to companies such as Nvidia. The market size for AI has grown a thousand-fold, he said. AI will create more jobs in the short term, but it will also lead to some jobs being replaced by automation. He advises people to learn how to use AI and adapt to changes in their jobs.

It is noted that Jensen Huang also introduced Nvidia’s organizational structure and culture. He said that Nvidia is not commanded and controlled from the top down like the army, but is divided into layers like a “computing stack.” He said that Nvidia is a “neural network” and each level has its own decision-making power and creativity. He believes, “Your organization should be the architecture of the machine you build your products on.”
