Nothing Phone (1) Officially Announces Availability of Android 14 Beta Upgrade

After announcing late last month that the Nothing Phone (1) would be one of the first Android phones, other than the Pixel, to get a sneak preview of Android 14, Nothing today officially announced the launch of its developer preview program.

The program gives Nothing Phone (1) owners the option to upgrade to Android 14 Beta, with the caveat that in addition to wiping all data from the device, the update requires a sideload install and does not support OTA upgrades.

The Nothing website provides a detailed guide on how to do the update, which requires downloading the update package directly on the phone and other manual steps. Since the Build version is still in early development, it’s not easy to install, so it’s not recommended for everyday use or non-advanced users.

In addition, as was the case with the early beta, you will encounter certain issues if you choose to proceed with the installation,

The relevant known issues are as follows:

  • Fingerprint cannot be registered.
  • Face Unlock is not available.
  • The Glyph feature is not available.
  • Battery sharing is not available.
  • No portrait mode or slow motion function in the camera app.
  • Nothing Weather and Nothing X apps are not pre-installed.
  • Screen projection to TV connection is not available.

Nothing also provides a rollback tool in case something goes wrong and users need to roll back to a stable version of Android. Please note, however, that this tool will again completely wipe the device, so a full backup is recommended. i
