Nokia to lead the second phase of EU 6G flagship program

Nokia has announced that it will take a leadership role in the Hexa-X-II program, the second phase of the European 6G flagship activity. This new phase will expand the list of Hexa-X partners to 44 organizations, which are tasked with creating the pre-standardized platform and system view that will lay the foundation for future 6G standardization.

The Hexa-X-II program has received funding from the European Commission as a key component of the first call for the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU). This is the next important step in bringing together key European industry stakeholders. The goal of Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II is to make Europe the leader in 6G.

Hexa-X-II represents the complete value chain for future connectivity solutions. Its members range from network providers and communication service providers to vertical and technology providers, as well as the most renowned European communication research institutes.

Supported by Hexa-X innovations, the Hexa-X-II Alliance will strive to overcome the following societal challenges.

● Sustainability

Hexa-X-II will research technologies that help to achieve a zero carbon footprint and limit energy and material consumption.

● Inclusiveness

Hexa-X-II aims to provide connectivity to people in developing countries as well as to disadvantaged groups in developed societies.

● Trustworthiness

Hexa-X-II will ensure data transparency, security and privacy as well as network robustness.

As part of the announcement, Ericsson will act as the technical manager of Hexa-X-II. Orange, TIM SpA, TU Dresden, University of Oulu, IMEC, and Atos will help coordinate various work packages such as radio evolution and innovation, future devices and flexible infrastructure, intelligent network management and value as well as requirements and ecosystems.
