Nokia to deploy first 5G SA network in the Philippines

Nokia will create a 5G network design and proof of concept (POC) for Now Telecom to build the first 5G standalone (SA) network in the Philippines, according to a recent press release. Under the agreement, Nokia will design and implement a pilot 5G network at multiple sites in Metro Manila.

Stefan Wilhelm, head of Nokia Bell Labs Consulting, said, “The Bell Labs Consulting study will provide Now Telecom with the analysis, design and plans needed to implement the 5G SA network in a phased manner.” The related consulting work will start next month, while the actual POC will take place in July.

Mel Velasco Velarde, Chairman and CEO of Now Telecom, said: “A robust and reliable 5G network will play a key role in promoting social and financial mobility and stimulating the country’s economic growth, and Nokia’s proven expertise and partnership with USTDA will help us provide our employees with a world class 5G network experience. Now Telecom is a leading provider of 5G networks in the United States.

Now Telecom is reported to have received a grant from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to support the development of 5G mobile and fixed wireless networks in the Philippines.
