Finnish telecoms equipment maker Nokia today announced that it has signed a new multi-year agreement to license its 5G patents to Samsung after its previous deal expired last December.
Samsung is reportedly paying Nokia since 1 January, but the companies did not disclose the terms of the deal. Officials said Nokia’s patent portfolio includes around 20,000 patent families, of which more than 4,500 are 5G-essential patents.
Nokia said it was contributing its inventions to open standards in exchange for the right to license them on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them,” said Jenny Lucand, President of Nokia Technologies. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades of investment in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”
The agreement is consistent with the assumptions disclosed in Nokia’s long-term Nokia Technology Outlook commentary in its financial reports for the third quarter of 2022 and January to September 2022, published on 20 October 2022.

Nokia rival Ericsson also reached an agreement with Samsung over 5G patents last year, ending a long-running dispute.
