Nokia and Samsung extend cross-licensing patent agreement

Nokia and Samsung have reached a new agreement on 5G patent technology that will see the South Korean tech giant use Nokia’s “fundamental inventions for 5G and other technologies”. The two companies previously signed a similar agreement, which expires at the end of 2022.

Under the agreement, which covers Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies, Samsung will pay Nokia a multi-year fee starting on 1 January 2023. The terms of the agreement remain confidential between the parties.

The agreement is consistent with the assumptions disclosed in Nokia Technologies’ long-term outlook commentary in Nokia’s financial reports for the third quarter and January-September 2022, which were released on 20 October 2022.

Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry and we are pleased to have reached an amicable agreement with them,” said Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, in a press release. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades of investment in R&D and contributions to mobile phone standards and other technologies.

Under the new agreement, Samsung will pay royalties to Nokia over a period of many years, with a start date of January 1, 2023.

Nokia currently holds more than 20,000 patent families, 4,500 of which are considered critical to 5G technology. Since 2000, the company has invested more than 130 billion euros in research and development.
