Nokia and Nomios Group create new ultra-high-capacity IP backbone for GÉANT

Nokia, Nomios Group and GÉANT jointly announced that GÉANT will deploy Nokia IP / MPLS solutions, this cooperation is part of a 10-year framework agreement led by network security services and solutions provider Nomios Group.

As part of the replacement project for GN5 IP/MPLS routing and switching, GÉANT will be the first National Research and Education Network (NREN) in the world to deploy 800 GE-routed interfaces and triple the network capacity.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nomios and Nokia will undertake a complete replacement and upgrade of GÉANT’s existing IP/MPLS routing and switching infrastructure, ensuring enhanced scalability, security and reliability of GÉANT’s network operations. In addition, Nomios and Nokia will provide comprehensive support and maintenance services to keep GÉANT and its user base running.

The Nokia 7750 SR service router IP/MPLS platform is based on the self-developed FP5 network processing chip and supports 800G transmission. Compared to previous-generation routing chipsets, FP5 consumes 75% less energy per unit of information processing.

MPLS is a tunnelling technology that supports a variety of high-level protocols and services and can guarantee the security of information transmission to a certain extent.
