Nissan announced plans to launch electric versions of the Qashqai, JUKE and new Leaf. All three models will be produced at the Sunderland plant in the UK. At the same time, Nissan will also build a third Gigafactory in Sunderland.
Nissan’s “EV36Zero” manufacturing plan includes the production of three electric vehicles in the UK, the construction of a third gigafactory and an investment of 3 billion pounds.
Both vehicle and battery manufacturing will be powered by the EV36Zero microgrid, which will integrate Nissan’s wind and solar farms and will have the ability to provide 100% renewable electricity to Nissan and its neighboring suppliers.
The announcement comes after Nissan confirmed that all new cars in Europe will be fully electric and expects its passenger car lineup in Europe to be 100% electrified by 2030.
Nissan’s latest investment includes £1.12 billion in its UK operations and supply chain for the development and manufacturing of two new models, including improvements to facilities and manufacturing processes, skills training and supplier development tool. Previously, Nissan announced an investment of 423 million pounds in the first phase of EV36Zero, the first future electric vehicle.
The two new models, plus an additional gigafactory and further investment in infrastructure projects, will bring investment of up to £2 billion.
In addition, the UK government has provided £15 million in funding for a £30 million partnership led by Nissan. It will strengthen the technical capabilities and R&D of zero-emission vehicles at Nissan’s Technical Center (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and increase opportunities for additional UK investment in the development of future models.
