Given that the original Switch has been on the market for nearly six years, Nintendo is clearly actively planning a major update to its hardware specifications. Although the official word has been tight, the latest leak reveals that it is expected to use the Nvidia Tegra 239 chipset. According to Reddit user u/followmeinblue, this is an SoC with an octa-core CPU. In addition to being confirmed by an Nvidia employee, the developer also posted relevant comments on the Linux kernel mailing list.
The leak itself is a bit boring, and @Kopite7kimi mentioned back in June last year that the next generation Switch would use the T239 SoC.
As a custom version of the NVIDIA Orin chip, it is based on Ampere GPU architecture (with 2048 CUDA cores) + ARM Cortex-A78AE CPU core.
The rumors also claim that Nintendo’s next-generation consoles will support NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Light Tracing (RT) features, as they are both referenced in the second-generation graphics API.
However, after the initial model was released in 2017, Nintendo also released the Switch Lite, which cannot be detached from the Joy-Con handle, and a model with an OLED screen instead (with improved battery life and display quality).
As for buying advice, if you already have a Switch on hand, there is not much need for it at this stage.
In addition, if you really can’t wait for the arrival of new products, then it is clear that the Switch OLED is a more appropriate choice.
