According to a new U.S. poll, 73 percent of employers admit to currently using software to monitor their employees, including the use of time tracking, real-time location tracking and screen monitoring, and employees are concerned that the development of the metaverse will make surveillance easier.
The data shows that the means of monitoring employers are most interested in are recording workplace meetings (42%), time tracking (39%), real-time location tracking (39%) and screen monitoring (39%); while employees are most concerned about real-time location tracking (51%), screen monitoring (50%) and time tracking (47%).
Employee monitoring software has become a popular way for employers to keep an eye on their employees, and the metaverse will increase the likelihood of monitoring. Most employers say they are excited (66 percent) and optimistic (54 percent) about the future of working in a metaverse, while employees say they are anxious (24 percent), skeptical (20 percent) and confused (17 percent).
“Given the reluctance of many workers to accept further monitoring in the workplace, employers should exercise caution when planning to implement further monitoring activities in the meta-universe in the future and consider whether it is worth losing employee trust and satisfaction to do so.”
A total of 1,500 employees and 1,500 employers in the U.S. were surveyed to understand their perceptions of working in the metaverse.
