Mercedes-AMG launched the AMG E53, a high-performance plug-in hybrid version of the new E-Class, which not only retains strong power but also brings electrified fuel economy. The new car provides sedans two models to choose from: and travel version.
The new E53 AMG subverts the previous convention of AMG “Lite” versions using small-displacement engines. It is not only equipped with a longitudinally mounted 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, but its power is improved compared to the old model, and can output 443 horsepower. . Combined with an additional 161 horsepower electric motor, the combined maximum power of the vehicle reaches an astonishing 577 horsepower. In Race Start mode, this figure can be briefly increased to 603 horsepower. Torque has also been significantly improved. The new model’s peak torque is 750 Nm, which is a significant increase compared to the 520 Nm of the old model.
Thanks to the surging power, the sedan version of the new E53 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers in just 3.8 seconds, while the station wagon version is slightly slower by 0.1 seconds. Both models have an electronic speed limit of 250 km/h, which can be increased to 280 km/h (sedan) and 275 km/h (estate) with the optional AMG Driver’s Package. The top speed in pure electric mode is 140 km/h.
Like the new GLE 53, the new E53 AMG also uses a plug-in hybrid system. The battery pack arranged under the trunk floor has a usable capacity of 21.22 kWh and a pure electric cruising range of more than 100 kilometers under WLTP conditions. The electric motor is integrated into the nine-speed automatic transmission, which saves space and ensures transmission efficiency.
Compared with the regular E-Class, the new E53 AMG has higher body rigidity, larger brake discs, and standard rear-wheel steering. The full-time four-wheel drive system is paired with adaptive suspension with variable damping to further improve handling performance. In terms of appearance, the new car adopts a more sporty style, including widened front fenders, AMG family-style dot matrix grille and square exhaust outlets. It is worth mentioning that the front axle of the new model is slightly wider than that of the regular E-Class.
Sadly, the E53 AMG will no longer be available in coupe and convertible versions for the new generation. However, Mercedes-AMG has replaced it with the new CLE 53 model, which is also equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine, but not a plug-in hybrid system.
The new E63 is also about to be released, and will also use a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but the iconic V8 engine will be replaced by an inline six-cylinder engine. This also continues the path to electrification for the C63 and S63, signaling the end of the era of fuel-only AMG performance cars.
The new E53 AMG sedan is expected to go on sale in the United States later this year, with pricing to be announced closer to launch. With reference to the starting price of the previous generation model of US$81,300 (Note: currently about 585,000 RMB), it is expected that the price of the new model will also be in this range.
