Netflix plans to charge $7 to $9 for ad-inclusive packages: 4 minutes ads per hour

Netflix plans to charge between $7 (about CNY 48.16) and $9 (about CNY61.92) for its upcoming ad-laden packages, according to Bloomberg. Currently, Netflix’s lowest price plan in the U.S. is $9.99 (about CNY 68.73) per month for a 480p streaming service.

Netflix also has a 1080p streaming service for $15.49 (about CNY 106.57) per month and a 4K streaming service for $19.99 (about CNY 137.53) per month. The low-cost package with ads is aimed at those who don’t mind ads and don’t want to pay more than $9.99 for a standard Netflix subscription.

Netflix plans to bring in about 4 minutes of ads per hour, which will be shorter than the 10 to 20 minutes of ads per hour that cable companies have. Users won’t be able to skip ads or access playback controls while they’re playing, but Netflix wants to limit ad targeting to ensure ads don’t get too repetitive.

In addition, ad-inclusive packages will have more restrictions, and Netflix does not plan to allow subscribers to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing. Netflix aims to launch more affordable plans in select markets by the end of this year, but a full rollout may not occur until 2023.
