Mixpanel data shows: iOS 16 launch adoption rate is more popular than last year’s iOS 15

The latest data from analyst firm Mixpanel shows that iPhone users are adopting iOS 16 at a faster rate than last year’s iOS 15 — an estimated 23.82 percent of iPhones had iOS 16 installed nine days after launch. For reference, 10 days after launch in 2021, only 19.3 percent of devices had iOS 15 installed — largely because of some early bugs that affected users’ willingness to update. In contrast, the new visual changes introduced in iOS 16 seem more attractive.

Similar to last year’s cadence, Apple is offering a security update that allows iPhone users to continue using iOS 15 without having to immediately switch to iOS 16. Recall that with the release of iOS 15, the company left a cushion of about four months for iOS 14.

● The redesigned lock screen experience/widgets make iOS 16 even more customizable, and the new version includes improvements such as iMessages message editing/undo sending.

● The upcoming iOS 16.1 update will also bring some noteworthy changes - such as Live Activity on the lock screen and a power indicator on the status bar.

With iOS 16 adoptions growing by the hour, there are still about 66.86 percent of devices running iOS 15 and another 9.32 percent running older versions of the system. The numbers are expected to change further with the arrival of the iOS 16.1 update in October.

Mixpanel’s data is reportedly collected from visits to websites and apps that use the company’s analytics SKD, so the fluctuating numbers can only be considered an unofficial reference. However, in retrospect, Mixpanel’s data has always been comparable to Apple’s official results.
