Microsoft today pushed a new preview version of Win11 for the members of the Windows Insider project in the Canary channel, the version number is Build 25921. The new version mainly supports HDR backgrounds, the start menu provides thumbnail previews for cloud files, and Cortana can be uninstalled.
The update content of Win11 Build 25921 preview version is as follows: Support HDR background
If you’re currently using an HDR monitor, you can set the JXR file as your desktop background and it will be rendered in full HDR.
To enable this feature, users need to first ensure that they have an HDR monitor, or connect to a screen that supports HDR. Users can check whether switching to HDR is supported by going to Settings > System > Display.
Next, download the HDR .JXR file to your device. Then right click on the desktop, select “Personalize”, then “Background”, and under “Personalize your background” – select the .JXR file you downloaded to your device.
If the user has multiple monitors connected, HDR or SDR will be dynamically selected based on the capabilities of each monitor.
When using an external display connected to the device, Microsoft recommends running an HDR calibration application for the best picture quality. Please note that for this release, there may be some issues with the HDR version of the desktop background not displaying correctly on some laptops with HDR.
Start menu offers thumbnail previews for cloud files
For users who log in to Win11 Professional or Enterprise editions with an AAD account (soon to be renamed Microsoft Entra ID), a richer thumbnail preview can be displayed after hovering over the Word cloud document under the “Recommended” column of the start menu.
Microsoft said that this feature does not currently apply to all files, but it will expand the number of supported file formats and further improve the preview effect in the future.
In addition, after users right-click these cloud files, they can quickly share these files.
Note: At present, only users who log in to the AAD account can see the rich thumbnail preview of cloud documents such as Word, as shown in the following figure:
Users signed in with a local or Microsoft account will see this experience when they hover over files (both cloud and local) under Recommendations on the Start menu:
A current bug is that for files that don’t provide a rich thumbnail preview, it shouldn’t show the preview area (where the thumbnail preview will be), the file format icon looks like this:
Improvements and optimizations:
Users can uninstall Cortana in this release. For more information on the end of support for Cortana, click here.
[taskbar and system tray]
As previously mentioned in Win11 Build 23481, the free version of Microsoft Teams is pinned to the taskbar by default.
Windows Insiders who click to launch Teams will discover a mini-communication experience that allows them to chat, call, and meet with their people with just a click or two.
[Task View and Desktop]
Tabs are displayed when users switch virtual desktops in Task View.
Users can see new sliding animations when switching virtual desktops using trackpad gestures, touch gestures, keyboard combinations, and clicking task view buttons.
