Microsoft to extend Windows 10 support to prevent 400 million computers

Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) recently launched a lawsuit against Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. A petition calling on the company to reconsider the move.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Organization believes that of the 1 billion devices currently using Windows 10, more than 400 million devices do not meet the upgrade requirements for Windows 11.

After the end of the Windows 10 life cycle, more than 400 million devices will lose Microsoft support and become obsolete. Microsoft should consider the 'end of Windows 10 life cycle' initiative and continue to provide services to users who cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Security updates, both for Microsoft's financial benefit and to protect the global environment.

Lucas Rockett Gutterman, campaign director of the American Public Interest Research Organization, said that Microsoft has expanded support for old operating systems in the past. For example, in the case of Windows XP, relevant users have received security updates for up to 13 years, so Microsoft has extended the support for Windows 10. Support cycles are also “possible”.

Global Windows operating system data for October 2023 disclosed by StatCounter showed that Windows 10 has the largest market share, accounting for approximately 70.88% of desktop computers. Windows 11 is the second most popular version with a market share of 24.89%. Additionally, Windows 7 still holds about 2.9% of the market. Windows 8.1 has about 0.57% of the market, Windows 8 has about 0.34%, and Windows XP has about 0.3%.
