Microsoft Teams is an online communication and collaboration office tool for organizations. Microsoft regularly introduces new features and improvements to this software. However, most of its work is aimed at the platforms where most of its user base is located, mainly Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Today, the Linux platform is also getting some love.
Microsoft has announced the general availability of Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) for Microsoft Teams in terms of official support. Microsoft says this will allow Linux users to take advantage of desktop-like features in Teams in a secure manner.
More importantly, the move essentially bridges the gap between the desktop versions of Teams on Windows and Linux. The latter has been available since 2019, but Microsoft claims that it can roll out new features faster with PWAs.
PWA also offers other benefits, including large galleries, common modes, custom backgrounds, reactions, system notifications, Dock icons and automatic restarts. Enterprises can also configure conditional access in PWA with Endpoint Manager.
Microsoft has advised Linux customers to switch to the PWA version of Teams, touting it as having desktop-like capabilities. Both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, which run on Linux, support the Teams PWA version.
