Microsoft today issued a notice announcing the divestiture of the Microsoft Mixed Reality Toolkit 3 (MRTK3) toolkit, the follow-up will be handed over to the GitHub independent team to maintain and follow up, but this does not mean that Microsoft has given up the development of the development kit.
Microsoft’s blog post is as follows:
MRTK, after independent operation, can get rid of many previous limitations, such as developers are difficult to introduce to other terminal products, affecting its function roadmap, and so on.
This shift does not affect Microsoft's subsequent investment in the MRTK3 suite, on the contrary, we have to increase investment and together with other major industry players to create a steering committee to continue to promote the development of the program.
Microsoft says the steering committee has already attracted at least 2 companies, Magic Leap and Qualcomm.
Microsoft says it will go live with Mixed Reality Toolkit 3 in the second week of September 2023, with a new version that will significantly improve overall performance, reduce memory footprint, and improve the user interface.
Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing the Azure Kinect developer tool and will stop selling it in October.
