Microsoft releases special Defender update package for Win11/10 22H2 ISO image

Microsoft has released an updated ISO installation image for Windows 11 22H2 and Windows 10 22H2, incorporating the May “Tuesday Patch”.

On the heels of that, Microsoft has now released new Defender Antimalware update packages for Windows operating system installation images, namely for the Windows Image format (WIM) and VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) formats.

The update supports Windows 11, all versions of Windows 10, and Windows Servers 2016 and 2019. This update package is required because Windows installation images may contain old, out-of-date antimalware definitions and software binaries.

In addition to better security, these updates can also provide improved performance benefits in some cases.

Microsoft is delivering the latest security definitions to Windows images with security intelligence update version 1.389.44.0 and Defender package version 20230503.1. In a support document describing the new update, Microsoft explained:

"Due to a Microsoft Defender protection vulnerability, newly installed Windows deployments may leave the system vulnerable. This is because the OS installation image may contain outdated antimalware binaries.

[..] Devices that use Windows built-in antivirus software or other security solutions can benefit from these updates.

[..] This article describes the antimalware update package for Microsoft Defender in OS installation images (WIM and VHD files). This feature supports the following operating system installation images:

 Windows 11

Windows 10 (Enterprise, Professional, and Home)

 Windows Server 2019

 Windows Server 2016
