Microsoft promises to provide Nintendo and Steam with 10 years of Call of Duty games if it successfully acquires Activision Blizzard

Phil Spencer, director of Microsoft Xbox, said that if Microsoft successfully acquires Activision Blizzard, it promises to provide “Call of Duty” games on Nintendo platforms and Steam in the next 10 years.

Spencer made the statement on Twitter, saying: “Following the merger of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has reached a 10-year commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms. Microsoft is committed to helping bring more Bringing more games to more people – no matter which platform they choose to play on.”

Spencer followed up with a second tweet, making a similar promise to PC gamers. “I’m also pleased to confirm that Microsoft has committed to continuing to offer Call of Duty on Steam after we complete our merger with Activision Blizzard,” he wrote.

The last time Blizzard released a Call of Duty game on the Nintendo platform was the Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was released in 2013. Spencer didn’t say what year he expects Microsoft’s first Call of Duty game to appear on Nintendo’s platform.

Phill Spencer was also interviewed by The Washington Post about the promise, and was asked about a potential time frame for Call of Duty’s return to Nintendo. If the acquisition were to close by June 2023 (assuming it wasn’t blocked by regulators), Spencer replied, “You can imagine if [the deal] closed on that day, and then started doing the development work to make it happen.” , it might take a little bit of time. Once we get into that cadence, our plan is that when [a Call of Duty game] launches on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, it will also launch on Nintendo.”

When asked if the Switch would be capable of playing Call of Duty, Spencer cited Microsoft’s multi-platform game Minecraft as an example of how such a cross-generational project would work, “We’ll do the same with Minecraft.” Do, we’ll do the specific work to make the game work well on the Nintendo Switch and their chip, fully support their platform, and we’ll do the same when we launch the game on the PlayStation 5.”

Earlier this week, Microsoft President Brad Smith provided more information on the company’s proposal to keep the Call of Duty series on PlayStation for at least ten years in an editorial in the Wall Street Journal. year details. “A significant portion of Activision’s Call of Duty revenue comes from sales on the PlayStation platform,” Smith wrote. “Given the popularity of cross-platform play, if it is not available on the PlayStation platform, it will be very difficult for the Call of Duty franchise and the Xbox itself. It would be catastrophic and alienate millions of players. That’s why we offered Sony a 10-year contract to have every new Call of Duty game come to PlayStation on the same day it comes to Xbox …we are open to offering the same commitment to other platforms and making it legally binding with regulators in the US, UK and EU.”
