Microsoft patent granted: algorithmically calibrating webcam height and tilt angle

(USPTO) publicized list, Microsoft was granted a new technology patent to further calibrate webcams through advanced algorithms.

Camera settings are important for remote meetings, and Microsoft has been currently experimenting with Inteliframe in the Microsoft Teams app: a feature that automatically detects faces and then displays information about them in real-time.

Microsoft’s current patent application for the technology further calibrates the webcam by combining information such as camera data and virtual data, and can be easily integrated into Windows, Microsoft Teams, or any other application that uses the camera.

Attached are the patent works as follows:

  1. The camera takes the first image of the user in a certain position. The image includes only the upper half of the user’s body.
  1. The camera then takes a second image of the user at a different location. This image should also include the user’s upper body, but not the entire body.
  1. the system estimates the distance between the first position and the second position relative to the camera.
  1. using the first image, the second image, and the estimated distance, the system calibrates the height and tilt angle of the camera.

Security systems, interactive video games, robots, self-driving cars, and even smart home devices could use the technology to function based on human movement and provide an optimal experience.
