Microsoft, OpenAI, Google and other giants jointly established the Frontier Model Forum

The development of artificial intelligence is changing with each passing day, especially generative artificial intelligence, which has become a hot topic in the technology industry. However, generative AI also runs the risk of getting out of control. To ensure the “safe and responsible” development of generative artificial intelligence, today four leading AI technology companies announced the formation of the Frontier Model Forum.

The Frontier Model Forum is an organization focused on cutting-edge artificial intelligence models, co-sponsored by Microsoft, OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. The so-called cutting-edge artificial intelligence models refer to those large-scale machine learning models that surpass the capabilities of the existing state-of-the-art models and can perform multiple tasks.

In a Google blog post, the group unveiled its goals, as follows:

Advance AI safety research to facilitate responsible development of cutting-edge models, reduce risk, and enable independent, standardized capability and safety assessments.

Identify best practices for responsible development and deployment of leading-edge models, and help the public understand the nature, capabilities, limitations, and implications of this technology.

Collaborate with policymakers, academics, civil society and business to share knowledge about risks to trust and security.

Support the development of applications that can help address society's greatest challenges, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, early cancer detection and prevention, and combating cyber threats.

The organization will first establish an advisory board to begin developing recommendations for safety standards for cutting-edge AI models, conduct AI safety research, and share that work with other companies and governments.

Microsoft President Brad Smith was quoted in the joint statement: “Companies that create AI technology have a responsibility to ensure it is safe, secure, and controlled by humans. This initiative is about bringing the technology community together to advance responsible AI development and address challenges an important step so that it benefits all mankind.”

The Frontier Models Forum also welcomes more companies engaged in the development of cutting-edge AI models to join the organization, as long as they also demonstrate a strong commitment to the safety of cutting-edge models, including through technical and institutional approaches.
