Microsoft introduces new HDR calibration app for Windows 11

The Windows 11 2022 Update, released by Microsoft a few days ago, introduced a number of optimizations and improvements for gamers, and Microsoft also introduced a new Windows HDR Calibration application. Note that this is not related to Windows 11 2022 Update, the application is also available for Windows 11 21H2 version.

First released in January of this year, this app introduces Xbox’s HDR Game Calibration feature to Windows systems. This Windows application offers three main test modes, including modes for determining the darkest visible detail, the brightest visible detail, and the maximum brightness of the display. These are based on the recommendations of the HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG). In addition, Microsoft has added another feature that gives full control over color saturation.

Microsoft says calibrating your monitor will ensure you get the best viewing experience for HDR content and help avoid clipping effects. There are two ways to launch the Windows HDR Calibration app: one is to download the app from the Microsoft Store here, and the other is to launch it from Settings > System > Display > Use HDR > HDR Display Calibration. However, the latter is only supported by Windows Insiders.

If you are experiencing HDR calibration issues, make sure you have an HDR display and meet the minimum requirements mentioned here. It is also important to know that the app does not run on Windows 10 and that not all GPUs support color saturation adjustments. You also have the option to submit feedback directly to Microsoft via the dedicated feedback button in the upper right corner of the app’s main menu.
