Microsoft-Google alliance actively promotes AI safety standards

According to news on the evening of October 25, Microsoft, Google, artificial intelligence startups OpenAI and Anthropic are stepping up the development of artificial intelligence (AI) safety standards and appointed a director today in order to fill the gap in global supervision.

This summer, the four technology giants jointly established a new industry organization, the Frontier Model Forum, dedicated to the safe and responsible development of AI models. Today, they appointed Chris Meserole, director of artificial intelligence at the Brookings Institution, an American think tank, as the organization’s executive director.

Additionally, the Frontier Model Forum said it plans to invest $10 million in an AI security fund.

Meserole said: “We are probably still some way away from real regulation. In the meantime, we want to make sure these systems (regulatory rules) are as safe as possible.”

Over the past few months, concerns have grown that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence has the potential to replace human jobs, create and spread misinformation, or ultimately surpass human intelligence.

Meserole said the forum would seek to complement any official regulations. It is expected that the EU’s artificial intelligence bill will be finalized early next year. Meanwhile, the UK will host the first Global Artificial Intelligence Security Summit next week, where leaders and major technology executives will be invited to discuss relevant cooperation.

Meserole also said the forum would initially focus on risks, including the ability of artificial intelligence to help design biological weapons and the ability to generate computer code that could be used to facilitate hacking of critical systems.
