Microsoft Edge to gain less than 2% market share in full year 2022

Statcounter has released its latest report revealing information on the market share of different browsers on different platforms and operating systems. The overall picture remains unchanged – Google Chrome remains number one with a commanding share, while Edge, Safari and Firefox continue to battle for second place. It should be noted that Statcounter’s findings are not 100% accurate, and you can learn how Statcounter collects its data in the official fact sheet.

According to Statcounter, Chrome currently holds 66.16% of the market. in December 2022, Google’s browser lost only 0.02 percentage points (down from 66.18% in November 2022), and this may only be a margin of error. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft’s Edge was the second most popular desktop browser with 10.99% (-0.18%), a more modest gain or loss.

Safari is the only non-cross-platform browser in the report, and its macOS exclusivity makes it harder for Apple to break out of its current market share. StatCounter says Apple Safari currently holds 8.98% (-0.61%). the Firefox browser ranks fourth with 7.22% (+0.12%), and Opera ranks fifth with 3.29% (- 0.3%) in fifth place.

As we move into 2023, let’s look back at the ebb and flow of browser market share over the previous years.

The overall picture has not changed much for the long-established browser developers. Google Chrome has been stable at 65-70% but has had periodic rises and falls, as has Apple Safari, which has a 9% market share. Firefox has experienced a significant decline in users, from about 10% in early 2020 to 7.22% at present.

Microsoft Edge’s experience shows that capturing the desktop browser market is quite a difficult task, even for Microsoft, whose more than 1 billion active Windows devices are capable of running Chromium-based Edge, and while performance keeps climbing every month, its year-over-year growth is less than 2%, as getting users to switch from Chrome to Edge is difficult, which explains why Microsoft sometimes takes a less user-friendly approach and imposes Edge in various annoying ways.
