Microsoft yesterday published an article on its official website about the recently introduced disk cache compression technology in the Edge browser. Microsoft said that starting from Edge version 102, Edge browser has supported automatic disk cache compression to improve performance and reduce disk footprint.
The Edge team’s goal is to provide the best-performing browser on Windows and other platforms. When a browser uses too many resources, it not only affects the browsing experience, but also slows down the entire system.
However, when it comes to performance optimization, the Edge team often needs to balance what it optimizes, because optimizing one resource usually increases the use of another. One of these is disk caching, a technology that allows browsers to store resources obtained from the Web so that they can be accessed quickly and later when needed. The more cache there is, the more likely it is that the requested resource will be available from disk, and generally the faster it will be than if the same resource were available from the Web.
The size of the disk cache, on the other hand, is a concern, especially on devices with insufficient disk space, where unlimited caching can lead to running out of disk space. To prevent the browser cache from taking up all the available disk space, Edge already supports regulating the use of disk cache based on available space.
Microsoft says the Edge browser will support compressed caching to save disk space. Starting with Edge 102, the Edge browser will automatically compress the disk cache on devices that meet eligibility checks to ensure that compression does not degrade performance.
